Rongo University, Portsmouth Partnership: Path to Climate Resilience and Sustainability.

The partnership between Rongo University and the University of Portsmouth is a groundbreaking initiative that seeks to address some of the most pressing issues related to climate resilience and sustainability challenges through collaborative efforts. This partnership has been hailed as a significant milestone by the British Council, which recently launched a visionary Learning and Design Lab under the UK-Kenya university partnership initiative. The first round of grants has been awarded to several institutions, including Rongo University (Kenya), Nottingham University (UK), University of Portsmouth (UK), Strathmore University (Kenya), and Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine (UK), and Kenya College of Accounting (Kenya).

Additionally, the British Council has entrusted Circle Innovation to lead the implementation of the Learning and Design Labs program. The Learning and Design Labs initiative aims to create a supportive environment for institutions and individuals to collaborate across borders. The program aims to promote innovation and entrepreneurship among students and institutions while facilitating stronger connections between UK-Kenya Universities and industry stakeholders. Through this initiative, the British Council hopes to support the development of a new generation of leaders equipped with the skills, knowledge, and resources to address the most pressing challenges of our time and foster long-term sustainable development in Kenya and beyond.

Monica Blagescu, Head of Education at the British Council, Kenya, said, “As we confront the urgent realities of climate change, it is essential that we empower young people to be at the forefront of sustainable solutions. By fostering collaboration between UK and Kenya universities and industry partners, we’ll not only help tackle environmental challenges but also equip young minds with the knowledge and skills to innovate for positive change.”

“Part of our Going Global Partnerships programme, the Learning and Design Labs contribute to improved student outcomes, promote internationalisation of education and build connections between people and institutions in Kenya and the UK.”

“We are delighted to have students from Rongo University (Kenya) and the University of Portsmouth (UK) working side by side here in Nairobi throughout the week.”

While applauding this wonderful initiative, Prof. Samuel Gudu, the Vice-Chancellor of Rongo University, thanked the British Council for the financial support that has made it possible to run the Lab. He reiterated that this partnership presents an opportunity for students to work alongside industry experts, gain valuable hands-on experience, and develop innovative solutions that can lead to a more sustainable future. The collaboration will endeavour to create a more sustainable and prosperous world for generations to come. This programme aligns with the University aspiration to become a word class entrepreneurial university for intellectual development through innovative teaching, research and community service

The Learning and Design Lab will be held in Nairobi from 13th – 17th May 2024 and will bring together 10 students from the University of Portsmouth who will work alongside 10 students from Rongo University.
