Empowering the Network Society with Digital Language Education

In today’s knowledge economy and networked society, the importance of digital language education cannot be overstated. Our identities and understanding of major political, social, and cultural happenings are constantly challenged. Technological transformations are creating interfaces between various fields through a common digital language. This language is the medium through which information is generated, stored, retrieved, processed, and transmitted. Our global economy is characterized by new modes of information flow and cultural communication. Our school provides courses that equip you with the necessary talent and skills for this rising network society. Our focus is on electronic-based information technologies using digital language for global communication and applications in commerce, science, and civil sectors. Our aim is to provide trained manpower capable of navigating the impact of information technologies in research, offices, industrial plants, and services.

Rongo University: Pioneering Information and Media Studies in Kenya

Established in 2012, the School of Information, Communication, and Media Studies at Rongo University has been a pioneer in Information and Media Studies in Kenya. Before its establishment, Kenyans aspiring to pursue programs such as records management, archives management, library training, publishing, and informatics had to study abroad. This was not only costly but also often irrelevant to the specific manpower needs of Kenya and much of the African region. Recognizing this, the Kenyan government and members of the information fraternity decided to establish a local training facility, leading to the birth of our school at Rongo University. We are proud to offer high-level training in Information Technology, Archives and Records Management, Librarianship, Publishing, and Mass Media, tailored to the unique needs of Kenya and the African region

Present Status

Since its inception in 2012, the school has developed to become a leading regional training ground for information-related professionals. Presently, the school offers bachelors, masters and PhD degrees in the following areas:

  • Information technology
  • Informatics
  • Records and archives management
  • Library and information studies
  • Publishing and Mass Media
  • Communication and Mass Media
  • Journalism
  • Graphics
  • Public Realtion

Rongo University: Leading Provider of Postgraduate Qualifications in Records Management and Librarianship

Graduates from our School of Information, Communication, and Media Studies are highly sought after, particularly those with postgraduate qualifications in records management and librarianship. These graduates are often immediately absorbed into the workforce upon completion of their programmes. In fact, many are recruited by potential employers during their final year of study. Currently, there is a significant shortage of graduates with postgraduate qualifications in records management and librarianship, particularly in the rapidly expanding university sector in East Africa. This has led to stiff competition for our graduates. Many of our international students are sponsored by their employers, who often guarantee them promotions upon successful completion of their programmes.

Rongo University: An Affordable University in Kenya with a Conducive Learning Environment

Rongo University, an affordable university in Kenya, is situated in the serene Kitere Hills near the town of Rongo. Known for its conducive learning environment, which is second to none in Kenya, the university offers an ideal setting for students to focus on their studies. The rural location not only provides tranquility but also contributes to a low cost of living, making it one of the most affordable universities in Kenya. The surrounding rich farmlands further reduce living expenses, making campus life affordable for all students. In addition to this, our tuition fees are very reasonable, and with most students residing either on campus or in the immediate neighbourhood, transport costs to and from classes are practically non-existent.

Rongo University: Leading Information Sciences Research in Africa

The School of Information, Communication, and Media Studies at Rongo University has recently established itself as a national and international research center in information-related disciplines, contributing significantly to information sciences research in Africa. Our PhD programmes continue to attract many students from across the African region, with the majority being university lecturers who leverage the excellent resources available in our school. We are proud to have a team of five professors and over 15 doctorate holders. Our university library boasts perhaps the best and most comprehensive resources on information sciences in Eastern Africa, with a wide range of electronic resources complementing our extensive print collection.

We have carved a niche in research, with areas of excellence including information ethics, disaster management, information needs and seeking behavior, copyright and its impact on information dissemination and use, legal information provision to rural communities, electronic records and preservation, fundraising for libraries, use of ICTs in poverty alleviation in rural areas, and knowledge and content management.

Rongo University: Leading Media Studies Collaborations in Kenya

The School of Information, Communication, and Media Studies at Rongo University has recently embarked on joint teaching and research programmes with both national and overseas institutions, establishing itself as a leader in media studies collaborations in Kenya. The industry in Kenya has recognized our leadership role in information sciences and has established both formal and informal collaborations with our school. Through these partnerships, many of our students have had the opportunity to gain practical experience through industrial attachments. A significant number of our final year students seconded to the industry end up being retained, particularly in media houses. In fact, there is hardly any media house in the country that does not have graduates from our school.
